Joan Rivers strolled out onto the runway seconds before the Badgley Mischka show on Tuesday morning prompting loud cheers and applause from the audience. And that may’ve been enough excitement for one show, except it was only the beginning.

Wild-haired models wore mostly embellished-to-the-hilt gowns in the tones of a black-and-white film – pewter, jet, platinum -- that were simultaneously take charge, and utlra-sexy without a whiff of frou-frou. The show opener, a bronze sequin chiffon and metal number bore resemblance to a warrior’s armor yet maintained its femininity. A few of the evening looks were simpler such as a pale rose hammered satin evening gown.

There were also furs – a sable and crystal shrug, another in silver fox and black jet – the designers didn’t hold back in the luxe department.

The duos’ second line, Mark & James which is less expensive, sportier and skewed a bit younger, was interspersed between the high end collection looks, Standouts here included languid pajamas silhouettes in antique lame, clean gray flannel pants topped with funky jackets, stretch denim jeans with a brocade coat. There was a keep-forever officers’ jacket and a brass and tweed corset and skirt ensemble. For fun, a frothy black cocktail job paired with hot pink shoes.

The whole vibe was gutsy, and a little naughty, but not overt. “It is a little dark,” said Mark Badgley backstage after the show. Rivers said she loved it. And Kelly Osbourne, also present, called the collection, “Silent film meets ‘Scar Face.’ “ Whatever.
