Banana Republic has been among the leaders in the designer collaboration craze, with popular collections by Trina Turk and Milly and one by Kate Middleton favorite Issa London coming soon, but the retailer is taking it to a whole new level for the 2013 holiday season with .?.?. drumroll please .?.?. L'Wren Scott.
Known for her opulent, exclusive and supremely expensive designs (A recent collection was embossed with 23-karat gold and a typical blouse will set you back more than $1,000), Scott has a history of being anything but attainable to the public, opting instead to dress princesses, first ladies and A-list stars.
Lucky for the rest of us, it seems Scott isn't above being wooed by tacos and guacamole. Simon Kneen, creative director and executive vice president of design of Banana Republic, took her for a bite at the Americano in Chelsea, and the rest is history.
But after getting her to sign on, (Scott herself was a Banana Republic shopper in her home state of Utah before her career took off), the biggest challenge was taking her top quality, high-end designs down to an affordable price point, Kneen told Women's Wear Daily.
“She’s much more couture than we’d ever be," he said. "How could we make her more approachable and understandable for our customer?"
“The collection has a very clear point of view," he added. "L’Wren knows what she wants and what she doesn’t want. She would bring jewels as inspiration for buttons. It was interesting for us to take that and make it much more affordable.”
Set to launch online and at select stores Dec. 5, the collection will include more than 50 pieces of clothing and accessories for women, including bejeweled cardigans, tailored jeans, sequin party dresses, silk and faux fur accents and three original prints — lips, peonies and candy stripes — in red, pink, violet and black. Prices will range from $39.50 to $198.
