This season’s Betsey-fest was a celebration of the female form in the most unabashed way. Inspired said notes, by Brigitte Bardot (read: lots of cleavage) and burlesque dancers of the 1940s (read: lots of cleavage, leg and tush), Johnson’s daughter LuLu, 37, was the first model on the runway, working a long, white stretchy number like a pro as the audience cheered wildly.
Next, a series of sheer looks clearly designed to show-off the lingerie beneath, which included lots of leopard-print bras, string bikinis and boy shorts. There were some romantic florals on a loose pajama-like pant and jumpsuit – pretty. In place of her famously frothy tutu frock were mini bubble skirts and dresses that kind of resembled fancy curtains. New for the Rihanna set – studded, spiked and crystal-encrusted jackets, shorts and headgear. Even more fun, oversized tees emblazoned with Betsey’s image, sweet crochets and a skirt with a zipper up the back left open to reveal ruffle-backed leopard undies. All very va-va-voom.
Accessories included '80s lightning-bolt earrings, hosiery with writing up the back seam and, of course, cool shoes – embellished and corseted – natch, from Steve Madden, Betsey’s newish boss who now owns the company. He sat front row with his family and declared the event “Fantastic!” But, new ownership aside, some things thankfully stay the same, and, of course, Betsey did her signature cartwheel at the end of the show.
