Betsey Johnson, with her bright red lips, wacky blonde hair and over the top girlie designs, has been a staple on the New York fashion scene for decades.
But after years of financial troubles, Johnson's licensing company, Betsey Johnson LLC, filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy April 26.
The company oversees Betsey Johnson boutiques, women's clothing and online sales, and as a result the majority of her freestanding stores will be closing.
Among the stores set to close are her only two on Long Island at Roosevelt Field mall in East Garden City and the Tanger Outlets in Deer Park.
This is bad news for loyal Betsey fans (they can usually be spotted rocking any combination of leopard print, studs, hot pink, bows and tutus) but good news right now for deal hunters.
Betsey Johnson has begun liquidation sales, resulting in 20 to 50 percent off the entire store at Roosevelt Field and 20 percent off the entire outlet store in Deer Park. Discounts of 20 to 50 percent are also available to online shoppers at betseyjohnson.com.
Items worth grabbing at Roosevelt Field include pretty floral dresses, cute watches and party-ready high heels.
Johnson's accessories and sportswear will still live on at department stores, and according to designer Steve Madden, who bought the licensing company's debt and took over control in 2010, the brand is doing just fine.
“Betsey Johnson's stronger than ever,” Madden told Newsday. “It was just a financial sort of .?.?. it was a way for us to get out of all the leases that they had. Betsey's stronger than ever and we have big plans for Betsey Johnson.”
