At Carmen Marc Valvo’s stellar show on Friday at the tents, our seatmate, the celebrity stylist Phillip Bloch (a Long Islander, by the way), checked off the run-of-show like a grocery list.
“Ohhhh,” he swooned, over the show-opening coat comprised of black square patent leather tiles. “I need that coat on Tuesday for celebrity X who’s going to the Beyoncé premiere.”
And so it went, as each of Valvo’s dark, sensual and oh-so-slightly edgy looks sauntered by. The collection was much less about bling than it was focused on luxurious material combinations. A black leather and shaved mink quilted coat would have been just the thing to fend off the day’s blizzard. A knockout merlot silk gown featured an alligator inset.
“I looove that color,” said Bloch of a grape cutout leather embroidered cocktail number. And, then there was the flowing wine taffeta skirt worn over slim tulle pants (pants are, it seems, being targeted for formal wear this season). “It’s very, very Lucy,” said Bloch. “You know, Lucille Ball.”
In the end, he summed it up. “It’s sexy, rock ‘n’ roll but still elegant. There’s a lot of good Grammy stuff here, especially with the new memo out on modesty.”
