Manhattan-based designer and socialite Lucy Sykes has tons of friends in high fashion, but it was a sleek, affordable Ann Taylor dress that landed her in The New York Times last year.

"That's where the love affair began," said Sykes, who also worked as senior fashion editor of Marie Claire.

The British-born beauty came to Roosevelt Field mall Thursday evening to toast the opening of the new Ann Taylor concept store and to talk about some of her favorite pieces from the new collection.

"Ann Taylor takes trends from high fashion and makes them realistic,"  Sykes said. "For a career woman at this price point, it's really a great option. She takes classic shapes and makes them fun and 'designery.' "

Color blocking was one trend Sykes found at the new store in this cowl neck top, which she said she would pair with black pants.

Other hot pieces right now are this sleeveless geometric print blouse and this snakeskin clutch, which Sykes suggests adding to any basic outfit.

In footwear, these suede platform wedges were a favorite, and of course Sykes applauded a classic trench coat, similar to the sleeveless version she wore herself.

"Who doesn't love a trench?" she asked a store full of fashionable women.

The room was silent.

All are available at the Ann Taylor Concept Store at Roosevelt Field Mall. Also opening today is LOFT, another division of the Ann Taylor brand that is making its debut in Garden City.
