Show notes at Diane von Furstenberg’s afternoon show at the tents on Sunday opened this way, “Some fairy tales end with the girl marrying the prince…some start there.” What happens next? The princess (who has the heart of a Gypsy, by the way) travels from Rome to Marrakech and in fairy tale fashion, ends up, “far from the palace now…she is the woman she wants to be.”
First off, anyone who knows anything about von Furstenberg, knows that, she in fact did marry a prince way back, that she has journeyed through many lands, and that she has reinvented herself. So it’s fair to assume that inspiration for this collection was a touch autobiographical.
But what about the clothes? Lush colors, signature bold prints and heavy embellishment made for a very good collection that felt like a celebration.
Odd but enchanting layering, such as a two-tone silk dress over a firework-red crepe pant looked exotic and fresh. Another ensemble included a turquoise raffia coat, turquoise embellished top and turquoise sequin pants — a whole lotta turquoise but a whole lotta fun. There was a Gypsy-bohemian quality to it all: a creamy, chiffon shift dress drenched in paillettes, a kiwi silk jumpsuit, a blood orange crepe gown. And, as dramatic as each look was, deconstructed, there was something for everybody.
In a rather gutsy and blatant cross promotion, von Furstenberg introduced Glass by Google on her runway touted as wearable technology (the product looks like eyeglass frames with a small shield on one side). Many a model sported these frames; she and DVF creative director Yvan Mispelaere wore them as they took their runway walk during which she plucked Google co-founder Sergey Brin from the audience.
