Oh what a vision at Donna Karan’s dreamy show called, “Pearls of Wisdom,” where the designer, once again, shunned black, opting instead for a palette chosen to evoke the glow of pearls on skin like “face powder,” blush and shadowy silver.
There were sturdy fabrics that seemed angel light, wool jersey, sueded moleskin and mohair. Coats were simply fabulous – a peach skinned trench so novel, yet so classic. An ethereal dress of felted wool lace was at once airy and substantial. Recommendation to the Manhasset Donna Karan store: stock up.
Silk chiffon and jersey – so fluid it looked poured – turned up in new bodyblouses (Karan’s latest take on that famed bodysuit) featuring V-necks and backs, some with billowy sleeves.
Many fabrics were treated with a spray of micro-pearls and sequins creating a subtle and seductive glow. But what really brought out the lady in this collection were accessories. You don’t expect Donna’s arty take to include classic ropes of pearls, but almost every model wore them. And fabulous, chiffon pearl grounded scarves that wrapped around the neck or conjured Grace Kelly when worn on the head. The shearling cuffs on long suede gloves – so swank and unexpected.
The last look in the lineup, a stretch satin jersey evening gown in pearl, was positively killer. And yet so signature Donna, that creatures on the moon might ask, “Is that Donna Karan?”
