New York fashion parties are legendary — beyond chic, crazy glam and often over-the-top fun. And guess what? You’re invited to the big mama of them all as Fashion’s Night Out explodes on the scene Thursday (not coincidentally, the first official day of Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week).

Some 1,000 retailers in Manhattan will participate in the after-hours shopping extravaganza, which was created three years ago to jump-start sales. Don’t feel like schlepping to the city? The event runs on a smaller scale all over the world, and a bunch of Long Island destinations as well as some 200 e-tailers are getting in on the action.

The NYC fashion blast is lively for sure. Find DJs spinning all over town, live performances from top artists such as Joss Stone and Kelly Rowland (Macy’s Herald Square), Alexa Ray Joel (Bloomingdale’s) and the Harlem Gospel Choir (Saks Fifth Avenue).

There are free manicures and makeup applications in loads of places, special FNO gift-with-purchases, contests and, to get those fashion juices flowing, creative cocktails being poured at many locations. Oh, and you can get around free on a Gray Line Double Decker bus sponsored by fashionista supreme Barbie. (She’s such a doll, isn’t she?)

Celebs attending include Michelle Trachtenberg and Hayden Panettiere, appearing with shoe guru Stuart Weitzman at his Madison Avenue store. Heidi Klum will hold court downtown at QVC (Kardashian mom Kris Jenner will be there, too), and grand fashion diva Miss Piggy will be at the ACE Hotel on behalf of clothing showroom Opening Ceremony.

Natch, designers will be out in force. Make sure to say hey to Michael Kors, who’s celebrating his 30th anniversary in business inside the window (yes, the man himself will be in the window) of Bergdorf Goodman, or catch up with Tommy Hilfiger or Rachel Roy, who will be joined by Knicks superstar Amar’e Stoudemire at Macy’s.

On Long Island, Saks at the Walt Whitman Mall is in big-time, offering gifts with purchase and raffles throughout the store, complimentary cosmetic touch-ups, an open bar, live DJ and hors d’oeuvres.

Elie Tahari in East Hampton is serving Champagne and there’s a gift for FNO shoppers. It’s a carnival theme at the new alice + olivia store at the Americana Manhasset, with quirky carnival games, free snow-cones and cotton candy. Also at the Americana, Juicy Couture will be offering shopping incentives (we call those discounts) on all full-priced items during the event.

Roosevelt Field has a number of stores participating: Make reservations for a free “make under” at Bare Escentuals, and definitely plan to party at Betsey Johnson and BCBGMaxazria.

In Huntington, hang out at Marshs for trunk shows galore, a fashion show, cocktails and hors d’oeuvres. And, speaking of food, if you really want to take a bite out of FNO, Crumbs Bake Shop, in Huntington and Woodbury, has created a luscious cupcake for the night (buy five, get the sixth free) — a portion of proceeds go to charity.
