Gilles Mendel said in program notes, “I wanted to reinterpret Old World glamour…into a modern fashion aesthetic.” He achieved his goal to great effect. His daytime pieces included crisp, color-blocked dresses, structured suitings, a skinny pant and another languid pleated pair all in strong colors, like electric blue, yellow and cypress green. They were clean, smart and sexy with just a hint of retro.
Evening was another story – sizzling as elite models like Karolina Kurkova stormed the runway in ethereal, body-grazing gowns, some embellished, slit thigh high with asymmetric hemlines that started out above the knee and grazed the floor, billowing behind wildly. Oh, the drama! The Olsen twins, who sat front and center, were clearly captivated.
Though Mendel started out as a furrier – and, yes, there were spring furs, a long-haired goat and shadow fox bolero for the girl who really has everything – they were secondary to the smashing lineup of modern, swanky clothes.
