Jason Wu: Chinese glam goes Hollywood at Fashion Week

It was a confident Jason Wu who delivered the goods on Friday, and what designer wouldn't be feeling pretty great about himself after the successes he's had. First came Michelle Obama's inaugural gown and, most recently, a deal with Target that went gangbuster. And after all that, Wu's top-notch show today, inspired in equal parts by his Chinese roots, Hollywood glam and Marlene Dietrich in “Shanghai Express.”

Giant red lacquered doors backed this long runway, and when they opened, smoke and models filled the room. They were military tough and glamorous all at once in structured jackets, many strong shouldered, belted and amply embellished with Swarovski crystals.

Mao jackets and Chinese Empresses co-existed on this runway – the latter done up with elaborate embroidery, signature lace, tassels and brocades. And with all this, there was Wu’s sportswear vibe that included an amazing puffy jacket emblazoned with shimmery brocade.

The last look was the embodiment of the collection: An embellished black wool jacket with epaulets and mink trim and a slit black devore skirt. And if that didn’t leave the assembled breathless, the finale did, as models side-by-side stormed the runway.
