We’re positively flipping over this year’s Project Prom girl, gymnast Katherine Grandazza, 18, from South Side High School in Rockville Centre. The senior, whose friends call her Kat, has, “been so busy all her life in gymnastics, that I would like her to take a break and enjoy the prom. A lot of her friends have already purchased a dress and Katherine has not thought about it yet,” wrote her mom MaryAnn in a letter nominating her daughter for Project Prom.
And here’s what has us doing cartwheels: though Kat’s perfectly comfortable in a leotard and shorts, she has never worn a fancy frock. Newsday readers are going to change all that when they vote for the dress Kat will wear to her prom (we’re buying) on June 26 at the Venetian Yacht Club in Babylon.
A little about Kat: Most recently, she placed fourth all around in the grueling New York State Championship, (her main event is vault), and despite her rigorous training and coaching schedule, she’s an honor student. “I’m really excited for the whole experience, but a little nervous, too,” the teen said. Not to worry. Newsday readers have excellent taste. Stay tuned.
