The wonderfully witty Kristen Wiig is the cover girl for Elle magazine’s August issue which was shot at East Hampton’s Grey Gardens, the legendary estate at 3 West End Road where wildly eccentric socialites Edith and Edie Beale lived, rarely leaving the grounds.
According to a statement, the location was chosen in part for Wiig’s “talent for creating original, out-of-this-world characters.” The feature marks the estate's debut as a fashion shoot location, and also, it has rarely been photographed at all since “Grey Gardens,” the 1975 documentary brought the lives of the Beales and their living conditions to light.
The 14-room home was sold to the Washington Post’s Ben Bradlee and Sally Quinn in 1979. Under the couple’s supervision the dilapidated manse that once housed 52 feral cats, underwent a massive restoration.
Elle editor-in-chief Robbie Myers said, “Putting Kristen on our cover was an easy choice to make because she is such an Elle woman – wickedly smart, brutally honest, funny, profane and profound. Plus she loves fashion and wears it with a relaxed ease.” The magazine hits newstands on July 22.
