Designer Isabel Toledo, worn most-famously by Michelle Obama at the 2009 Presidential Inauguration, has partnered with Lane Bryant to create the plus size retailer's first-ever designer collection.
The line, priced from $98 to $178, includes jackets, tops and dresses featuring Toledo's signature textures and fun, metallic prints.
“It’s really about proportion and fit, which can be a challenge at any size,” the designer told The New York Times. “I didn’t decide suddenly that I was going to add an elastic band.”
Linda Heasley, the chief executive of Lane Bryant, says the decision to pursue a designer collaboration was about catering to a customer base that is more fashion-forward than ever before.
“There’s a myth that this client only wants basics,” Heasley told The Times. “She has been told she can’t wear horizontal stripes or she can’t wear belts. That’s not true. We wanted to change the conversation.”
