Lauren 'Boogie' Brozoski is Newsday’s Project Prom girl

What makes Lauren Brozoski a good basketball player? Why does everyone call her "Boogie"? Newsday takes an in-depth look at the Long Island Lutheran senior point guard as she plays her final season before going to Michigan and continuing her dream of playing in the WNBA. (Newsday/Casey Musarra)

We’ve got “Boogie” fever. As in Lauren “Boogie” Brozoski, this year’s Project Prom girl (what a slam dunk!) and the champion point guard who attends Long Island Lutheran High School in Brookville.

The 17-year-old senior recently won the coveted Miss New York Basketball title, an honor that recognizes the top high school player in New York, and was voted New York’s Gatorade Player of the Year.

As team captain, she led the LuHi Lady Crusaders to their three-in-a-row champion seasons. All this and, says Denis Scannell, Long Island Lutheran’s middle and high school principal, she’s “An A+ student. She’s phenomenally talented on the court and in the classroom and an incredibly wonderful person to be around.”

Known by teammates and friends as Boogie, the 5-foot-5 hoops star wrote: “I do not really get the chance to dress up often because I am constantly in basketball shorts, T-shirts and sneakers. To be honest I wasn’t going to attend my senior prom until Project Prom inspired me. Most people see me as just an athlete, but I am a young lady who enjoys being glamorous at times!”

So, soon it will be time for Newsday readers to pick the dress Boogie will wear to her prom at Chateau La Mer in Lindenhurst. We predict she’ll be the belle of the ball — and we’re not talking basketball. Stay tuned.
