Marc by Marc Jacobs: Oh, those sophisticated '70s

At the Marc by Marc Jacobs Fall 2013

The Marc by Marc Jacobs line, especially popular with the older teen and 20-something demo, is often chock-full of campus-ready gear and preppy-with-a-twist collegiate looks.  For fall, the pendulum seems to be swinging in the opposite direction, with a line that seems focused on an après school wardrobe. Yikes -- these gals have had to get jobs, so they’re going to need more than that one interview suit.

The show on Monday evening was held at the Lincoln Center tents -- not Jacobs’ usual spot to hang.  (He prefers the Lexington Avenue Armory.)  He was, in fact, supposed to show his higher-priced Marc Jacobs line on Monday at the Armory, but, alas, the collection (and thus the show) has been delayed, which means he can’t break down the elaborate set yet.  So Marc by Marc was scooted over to this venue to be shown instead.  Hey, the show -- any show -- must go on.

Hems were occasionally short but mostly knee-length, and the styling was spare, sophisticated -- no eclectic and youthful piling on of layer after layer. This is office-ready attire, from the geometric print dresses, to the voluminous jackets and coats paired with cropped pants.

There was a decidedly ‘70s feel going on here, from the color palette -- lots of maroon -- to the profusion of done-up disco hair.

Standout pieces included a series of outfits in autumnal shades (a color-blocked sweater in Corvette red, merlot and burgundy atop bright red twill pants), and A-line jumpers and dresses that hang a hair lower in back.  The Darci bag (like a mini-round hat box) seems fairly irresistible, and the high-vamp platform pumps may set a new trend in motion.
