This Valentine's Day will be a special one at Newsday, since we will get the chance to give one lucky reader a makeover.
We received tons of amazing entries, and I wish I could go shopping with all of you. We had appreciative husbands and daughters writing on behalf of their busy wives and mothers, as well as ladies of all ages who took the time to tell me about their lives.
After much consideration, we chose Marguerite Snider of Massapequa as the winner. Snider, 79, an art teacher, wrote a letter filling us in on her Valentine's Day plans with her husband, Bob, 80.
“We met at Newtown High School [in Elmhurst, Queens] and have been going together ever since,” she says of her husband of 58 years.
Snider and her husband Bob will dine out at the spot they frequent every Valentine's Day — White Castle.
Each year on Feb. 14, the burger joint turns fast food fancy, with red table cloths, waiter service and even table reservations.
“It is quite romantic because while we were in high school we often had our dates at the hamburger-in-a-box restaurant,” she says.
Snider and I will go shopping for an outfit Feb. 6, and she will have her hair and makeup done by the pros at Salon Blue in Mineola on Feb. 14.
In a surprising twist, we found out after choosing Snider that she and her husband are the parents of Dee Snider, frontman of heavy metal band “Twisted Sister.”
We will capture the makeover and love story on video and on Shop Talk, so stay tuned! Thank you to everyone who entered and please keep reading for more contests in the future.
