Naeem Khan took Matt Damon and his wife Luciana, Padma Lakshmi, Kristen Chenowerth and close to 1,000 other audience members on a visit to his native country at his Tuesday afternoon show where his exotic collection of sparkling paisleys, metallic swirls and geometric prints were inspired, said notes, by “the decadence and the dust of India.”
Here, less was not more. There were round mirrored spheres covering some garments that caught the light like disco balls. A curtain of ivory and brown rustic beads comprised a few looks and the models made a clacking sound as they walked. The paisleys were downright gorgeous done up in gold and silver threads in silhouettes that ran from caftan to column.
The finale dress was truly armor -- a massive cluster of sterling silver pailettes (yes, we said sterling) --that while beautiful --was not light as a feather. The model virtually trudged under its weight during her finale walk.
Notably, Khan has wardrobed Michelle Obama for two state dinners. It will be interesting to see if red carpet types will dress slightly outside of the box and wear him. As for the glitterati in the audience, they beamed.
