Rio might be over, but New York Fashion Week, the Olympics of the fashion world, is on. It officially runs Sept. 8-15, as teams of fashion athletes (editors, reporters, photographers, bloggers, celebs and the like) sprint, race and tumble — those stilettos are the real challenge — all over town. Shows will take place at two major “arenas”: Skylight at Moynihan Station (West 33rd) and Skylight at Clarkson Square (in Soho), a midtown-downtown situation that makes the notion of pole-vaulting sort of practical.
While some 80 shows will occur at these two venues, scores more take place at other locales, including studios at Pier 59 and Milk on West 14th Street, the Highline and some yet-to-be-disclosed spaces. In many but not all cases, designers will strut their spring/summer 2017 collections. The newest sport this season is called “consumer facing,” an attempt to engage the general public. In a surging fashion movement, an ever-growing throng of designers is presenting “see-now-buy-now” capsule collections and, in a few cases, entire lineups that correspond to the season (in this case fall), offering consumers a chance to buy the looks in stores and online right away. There’s sooooo much to tell — here are some highlights.
The big buzz
Everybody’s coveting tickets to two big shows on Sept. 7, the day before NYFW officially opens. “Sometime” in the afternoon, Kanye West will present his Yeezy season 4 collection. You may remember, he showed season 3 last February during a blowout extravaganza at Madison Square Garden, where he also debuted his album “Life of Pablo.” The season’s most sought after (and hardest to get) ticket may well be for Tom Ford’s 7 p.m. show where the designer will present his Autumn/Winter 2016/17 men’s and women’s collection. The space, according to his reps, “has extremely limited seating quotas.” And there’s a dinner involved that is “a bit untraditional as it is a tight group of his friends and we are therefore keeping it super small.” If history is a guide, some of these friends may include Julianne Moore and Lady Gaga.
Tommy Hilfiger will take over Pier 16 in South Street Seaport on Sept. 9 for an extravagant carnival: food, rides, games and fall fashion. The show will live-stream online at tommy.com and in Times Square, and on Sept 10, Tommy Pier is open to the public.
Showman Tommy Hilfiger will unveil his Tommy X Gigi capsule collaboration with supermodel Gigi Hadid (pictured in one of the looks) at his elaborate carnival-meets-fashion-show at the South Street Seaport on Sept. 9. The lineup will also include a curated selection of fall looks from the main line and will be live-streamed online and on a billboard in Times Square.
Despite the hasty exit of Oscar de la Renta designer Peter Copping, who left the company after less than two years in July, the show shall go on at the Morgan Library and Museum on Sept. 12 (pictured, a May show in Australia). However, there will be no Calvin Klein show this season. Designer Francisco Costa has been replaced by fashion darling Raf Simmons (who hails from Dior) and will formally present in February. Diane von Furstenberg is holding showroom appointments – a far cry from her megawatt house party last season.
The cute brigade
Fern Mallis may have founded Fashion Week but her little nephew Theo Papaganis (pictured) owned it last season when he walked on the Rookie runway. This season, Rookie USA returns on Sept. 8, showing brands including Converse, Jordan and Levi’s modeled by real kids including Kennedy Cruz (papa is Victor), Kiyan Anthony (Carmelo’s little dude) and Sophia Pippen (Scottie’s girl). NBA great Ray Allen will host with wife Shannon, and the show benefits Allen’s charity, “Ray of Hope,” to assist children in need.
One of NYFW's sponsors, Lexus, spends a lot more time dressing the cars than it takes to do the models. This season, they’ll be wrapping cars from bumper-to-bumper in patterns and colors from MADE New York designers. The cars don’t just look pretty, they help transport the fashion flock all over town and even have their own hashtag: #howfashiontravels. Off the runway, there are two new interesting consumer-driven, open-to-the-public retail pop-ups that will debut during NYFW. The Shop @NYFW, 875 Washington St. from Sept. 8-11, will sell jewelry and accessories from designers such as Alison Lou, Lizzi Fortunato and Monogram along with products from NYFW partners including Maybelline New York and Intel. From Sept. 12-14, FYI @Made New York, 449 W. 14th St., will sell straight-off-the-runway items from brands like Chromat, Maison The Faux, Pyer Moss and Patricia Field. FYI is supported in part by American Express, and customers who shop with their American Express card will receive a gift with purchase. And attention shoppers! Saks Downtown (pictured), brand spanking new at Brookfield Place on Liberty Street, opens to the public on Sept. 9. Get there early for a party featuring a DJ, gifts with purchase, fashion sketches, manicures and shoe-bag embroidery. Bloomingdale’s is offering all sorts of events during NYFW, including an appearance by Kimora Lee Simmons, who will launch her new designer label at a runway show on Sept. 8. Also, never ones to be left out of the fashion scene, Kendall and Kylie Jenner will open a pop-up shop on Sept. 7 to sell their Kendall + Kylie collection in the Meatpacking District at Samsung 837, 837 Washington St., and reportedly will meet and greet fans.
Get into the act
Get a fun and hefty dose of the scene at the Macy’s Front Row event being held at the Theater at Madison Square Garden, also on Sept. 7. It includes special performances by Ariana Grande and Flo Rida (pictured), and will present fresh fall looks from brands including Calvin Klein, Rachel Roy and Tommy Hilfiger, along with an exclusive debut of Betsey Johnson’s collection inspired by the upcoming feature film “Trolls.” Tickets sell for $55 and $80 (ticketmaster.com, 866-858-0008 or in person at the Madison Square Garden box office). Macy’s will contribute 100 percent of the purchase price to support the Ronald McDonald House New York and the Council of Fashion Designers of America Foundation, Inc.
Yandy.com, an online resource for costumes, lingerie and swimsuits, is putting on an all-costume fashion show on Sept. 9, offering looks that will be available for Halloween including this one: "sexy Hamilton."
Chelsea Clinton is using NYFW to help her mom raise money at a pre-NYFW fashion show on Sept. 6 at Spring Studios, reportedly hosted by Huma Abedin and Anna Wintour. High rollers can pay $25,000 (for among other things two tix, backstage access and a chance to hobnob at a party with the likes of Tory Burch, Marc Jacobs and Diane von Furstenberg). General admission is $100. But don’t be surprised if Ivanka Trump appears on the scene, too – she’s been a regular at top shows for many years. Right off the runway
Club Monaco, presenting for the first time, is showing this fall so you can buy the stuff in store and online right after the show. Here’s an example of what we’ll see.
