The meteoric rise of outrageous German designer Philipp Plein — known for over-the-top luxe and in-your-face tackiness — may have fashion pundits scratching their heads, but the crowd he drew to the Hammerstein Ballroom for his raucous “Good Gone Bad” runway show Saturday night was way more diverse than your standard fashion event. (The front row included rapper 50 Cent, actress Bella Thorne, the Fifth Harmony gals and basketball pro Iman Shumpert.)
Nicki Minaj, who entertained at the after party, took a moment to thank Plein for being inclusive, noting that many brands typically “get really big off your culture — and then you never see anything like us in the front row.” Not so Saturday night, which may give Alexander Wang some pause. That designer — who held a show and party at the same time in Brooklyn — once set the standard for blowout spectacles, broad appeal and street cred. Looks like he now has some major competition.
