In a season where a lion’s share of designers have veered toward slim, spare, military-inspired looks, Oscar de la Renta chose to head in an opposite direction – one of exuberance, volume and major embellishment.
Models in crystal headbands opened the show in, here, toned down black and white dresses and coats featuring huge blow-ups of real jewelery emblazoned upon them.
Bit by bit, de la Renta unfolded his vision of unabashed luxury and glamour. Pale pink and blue pants ensembles – one topped with a jeweled blouse and a pink fox vest – were perfect for Aspen ski bunnies – especially with long-haired fur boots. Likewise, a belted puffy down vest with a fox collar. He paired this with a ribbon tweed dress and blue fox Oscar de la Renta headphones (for real)! Break out the hot toddies.
A black, tulle covered embroidered dress was literally spattered with different chunky multi-color gems. There were poufy numbers with tight bodices and full skirts that read a little young, a glossy flapper silver lame and beaded job, and a striking green crushed velvet column.
At some point, the models traded the jeweled headbands for tiaras. And why not? Huge, frothy gowns of tulle in rose, blue and silver were right out of princess storybooks.
