Ralph Appelbaum has owned the 2,000-square-foot store in this location for about three years (the former store was called Planet Pet), and specializes in natural foods (from about 87 cents for a can to $55 for a large bag) and pet grooming. There are dog cookies, as pretty as those for humans, ranging from 99 cents to $8.99; Newman's Own Premium Dog Treats ($4.99) to Merrick's Granny's Pot Pie and Venison Holiday Stew ($1.39). Foods include California Natural, Innova and Canidae, a grain-free food for $26.99. "We're trying to educate people on what would be healthy for dogs, and this seems to be helping dogs," he says. He says his 1-1/2-year-old standard poodle, Betsy, had "runny, gooey eyes," but he switched her to Canidae, "and within weeks, it cleared up - it just stopped."
Pet Station also has a selection of Lupine leaders and harnesses ($7.99 to $16.99); coats and sweaters; pet beds (a leather-look Diamond Pooch for $50); dog crates from $40-$95; toys and grooming tools.
The grooming operation is "very strong," Appelbaum says. "We have very good groomers."
