It may only be March, but students all over Long Island are already prepping for prom. As second semester flies by and college acceptance letters roll in, senior girls are faced with the challenge of finding the perfect dress to wear on their last special night as a high school student. We called in Lucy Sykes Rellie, fashion director at Rent the Runway, a designer gown and accessory rental site and top prom style destination. And don't worry-- she gave us tips for the guys, too.
What are some top trends for gowns this year?
Bold colors like reds, magentas and yellows have been really hot for gowns this year. Girls attending prom are looking for dresses that will make them stand out that night. Metallics and sequin embellishments are also on trend for prom, as well as the classic sweetheart neckline.
Long or short?
For many high schoolers, prom is the first special occasion that offers the chance to wear a long dress, so I think girls should embrace the gown and enjoy their Cinderella moment.
What's new for the guys this year?
Young men’s formalwear is becoming more and more fun! There are tons of ways to accessorize classic black-tie with festive tie clips, unique cummerbunds and personalized cuff links.
Bow tie or tie?
It totally depends on the guy and what look he is going for, but you can always count on a bow tie to add some quirk and personality to your traditional menswear.
How can a guy coordinate with his date without looking tacky?
If the girl is wearing a printed dress, her date could pick up one of the colors in her dress with the color of his tie. Otherwise, I think it's a good idea to avoid matching too perfectly, but rather to choose a dress and tie in complementary hues.
Who are some of your favorite prom gown designers?
It’s hard to pick favorites from Rent the Runway’s dream closet, but Badgley Mischka, BCBG and Carlos Miele all have beautiful options.
What hairstyles do you expect to be popular?
We have seen a lot of Old Hollywood waves and inventive braids on the red carpet, which I expect many girls will be emulating for prom.
Which celebrities can girls draw inspiration from?
Dakota and Elle Fanning have great red carpet style, because they're able to flaunt their girlie sides while still showing their personalities and pushing the envelope.
