Ralph Lauren: Spirited Bohemian meets Spanish flair

Toward the middle of Ralph Lauren's Spring 2013

Berets, bolero hats, hand-tooled belts and serapes were the accoutrements to Ralph Lauren’s stunning show at the downtown Skylight Studio Thursday morning.

Accessories come first, because they really established the vibe here: an artsy Bohemian spirit with a Spanish flair. It was luxe, textural and powerful, conjuring a woman with a sense of adventure and style.

The first look featured a lush, ruffled turquoise suede poet blouse, followed by a tomato suede top paired with an azure suede skirt – the fashion folks perked up. Toward the middle of the show, a model, hands on hips, walked with a graphic multicolor serape slung over the shoulders of her suit (just a touch of the toreador), evoking ooohs and aaahs. A variation on that theme – a sexy, off-the-shoulder top – was less dramatic, but perhaps more wearable. Lauren played with the proportion of short, bolero jackets over longer pieces – one trimmed in what looked like copper coin.

There were color-saturated suits – scarlet and amethyst. White shirts – one worn with an embroidered tulle skirt – were crisp toppers for many a pant and long skirt.

Evening was festive, long and lean for the most part. A lacey black silk chiffon tunic was elegant over black crepe pants. There were bustiers, crocheted and embroidered and beaded. A scarlet evening dress conjured (just a little) flamenco.

Before going backstage to see Lauren, Jessica Alba, sitting next to Olivia Wilde and Ryan Lochte, said, “I thought it was amazing.”  Who didn't?
