Inspiration: Presented downtown on Thursday morning, Ralph Lauren explained his collection as, “an exotic kind of luxury, the spirit of a romantic safari emboldened by luminous colors played against the heritage of pure khakis in sleek and modern shapes.”
The vibe: To set the scene, mosquito netting swathed the runway’s giant chandeliers and an enormous floral arrangement of exotic flowers and palm fronds greeted guests at this serene show. Ralph Lauren is one of the few designers who could focus on khaki cargo pants and turn the concept into high fashion — amped up rugged outdoors gone luxe is smack in the middle of his wheelhouse. He paired silky with sturdy, neutrals — sage green, beige and olive with hearty blasts of color — orchid, lemon, and poppy. And then there were the drool-worthy jewels — sparkling colorful stones — some set on plain clothes that worked like a canvas, others sewn into the garments. For evening, floor sweepers in tulle and silk taffeta — strong looks for confident women — these were flowy but not fussy.
Julianne Moore sat front row as did world famous polo star Nacho Figueras — (he's the face of Ralph Lauren Black Label) — and his stunning wife Delfina Blaquier, who looked rapt as the models passed her seat.
Lust-o-meter: A poppy red safari jacket over beige suede pants; a sage green canvas top with a suede peplum paired with a matching suede skirt; a sexy black, shantung dress with lacing at the shoulders and any evening dress in the lineup ... oh that orchid number. And did we mention the jewels?
Our take: Distinctly Ralph. Beautiful and wearable. Our guess? Women will go wild for this collection.
