Rebecca Minkoff is the ultimate "It girl" in fashion right now, and that always shines through in her New York Fashion Week shows, from the live music (this time courtesy of Janelle Monae), to the clothes (lace-up heels and handbags to die for), to the young, hot celebrities always sitting in the front row (Kelly Osbourne, Nikki Hilton, Jamie Chung and "Girls" star Zosia Mamet, to name a few).
We caught up with her backstage moments before her spring 2014 collection hit the runway.
What's different about this collection?
I was inspired by strong Latin-American women. You'll see a lot of texture, fabric, embroidery, of course--leather.
Do you have a preference between designing for spring or fall?
I used to. I used to like fall better because I like making jackets, but this spring I had a really fantastic time making dresses, mini-skirts ... it was my favorite season to do so far.
What about designing shoes vs. handbags?
I love them both!
What was your day like leading up to the show?
I got up at 7, I worked out, I ate breakfast and I had some makeup put on because I'm taking so many photographs I kind of have to look like I slept, and then I came here and started unpacking and getting ready.
What is it like becoming such a popular brand and seeing your clothes worn by such fashion influencers and celebrities?
I definitely feel pressure, but that's what I signed up for!
