Rebecca Taylor dresses A-list celebrities, puts on shows at New York Fashion Week, and owns boutiques in Manhattan's trendy Meatpacking District and on upscale Madison Avenue. But somehow, the New Zealand-born designer, who lives in Brooklyn with her artist husband and three kids, still finds time to be a doting mom. We got to chat with her about Mother's Day gift ideas, Kate Middleton's maternity style and more.
What are some Rebecca Taylor items that would make ideal Mother's Day gifts?
Well – being a mom myself, I’d love to get anything I wouldn’t usually buy for myself. Our cashmere sweaters are delicious and always great for weekends with the kids. I’m also hankering for some “bling.” The collaboration we just did with The 2 Bandits is perfect weekend jewelry.
What is the best Mother's Day gift you've ever received?
My first ever Mother’s Day with my twins. Just having them was gift enough.
Who is a celebrity mom you've dressed that you find especially stylish and why?
This might be cheating since she’s not a mom quite yet, but Catherine Middleton. Her maternity style is so put-together and classic, and I can’t wait to see how her style evolves once she becomes a mother.
How has being a mother inspired your designs?
I think you value versatility in designs more… it helps to have pieces in your wardrobe that can carry you from dropping your kids off at school, to the workplace, to dinner, etc.
Your kids are young, but are they starting to have their own fashion sense?
Yes! They always notice when I have a new lipstick or nail color. They come to put together their outfits in the morning. Some good, some bad, doesn’t matter… It’s all good.
Mother's Day deal
When customers spend $350 or more at any Rebecca Taylor boutique May 12-17 or at rebeccataylor.com May 14-17, they'll receive a free tote featuring a drawing by Taylor's husband, Wayne Pate.
"It’s a drawing of poppies, it’s a cool, serene image that’s perfect for spring," Taylor says. "I love the bold, graphic quality to it."
