Sea goddesses at Marchesa

Amphitrite, the goddess queen of the sea and wife of King Poseidon, would feel right at home in any one of the imaginative dresses and gowns by Marchesa. The collection was inspired by an underwater fantasy portrayed in a painting by Ilya Repin and was jaw-droppingly beautiful.

Long, silken fringes read like sea creature tentacles, and elaborate embroidery of fish and fish scales turned out on body-conscious sheaths and dreamy, three-dimensional gowns. Looks incorporated bolts of tulle, chiffon and translucent colored mesh. One amazing confection appeared to have a silver cage-like underlay, while another boasted a “fin” hip detail.

In the past, Marchesa has shown the collections presentation-style, but Tuesday’s show was their first real runway production, which was artfully executed in the Oak Room at the Plaza Hotel, where guests, including Courtney Love and Molly Sims, were greeted by a display of rare orchids to match the rarefied designs.
