Traditionally speaking, platinum is the thing to buy when celebrating a 20th anniversary.
But there will be so many more options available on July 29 when Super Saturday — the super-chic designer sale benefiting the Ovarian Cancer Research Fund Alliance (OCRFA) — returns to the Hamptons for its 20th year.
For any charity, a two-decade run would be worth shouting about, but it’s especially impressive here.
“The current retail market has proven challenging for a charity event that relies on clothing donations,” notes Audra Moran, president and CEO of the alliance. Designers, these days, just don’t have the extra stock they once produced and donated, she says, and keeping brands committed to the cause can be tough.
Back in 1998, when Donna Karan created the event with her friend, Harper’s Bazaar editor Liz Tilberis, it was a modest affair held in Tilberis’ backyard, with designers emptying out their personal closets. The charismatic Tilberis later died of ovarian cancer, and the sale exploded into a major, star-studded East End event, called the “Rolls-Royce of garage sales.” Last year, it raised nearly $3.5 million.
“Liz Tilberis was a force in the industry,” says Moran, “and we have worked hard to keep her legacy alive.”
This year, labels including Carolina Herrera, DKNY, Edie Parker, Karl Lagerfeld Paris, Ramy Brook, Theory, Urban Zen and Vilebrequin are offering apparel, accessories, beauty items and more, all at slashed prices.
Hosted by Kelly Ripa, Karan and her daughter, Gabby Karan de Felice, Molly Sims and Rachel Zoe, the event will feature a luxury raffle, fortuneteller, manicures and a carnival and games for kids.
