On again, off again, on again. That was how it went with Betsey Johnson's show at New York Fashion Week.

When it was finally "on," Newsday decided to bring in a guest reviewer: 17-year-old Melanie Martinez of Baldwin, the teen contestant who made it to the top six on the NBC hit show "The Voice." Who better, we thought, than this teeny fashionista who favors '50s frocks and Peter Pan collars, to lend her voice to the trends?

Martinez, who was approached by dozens of adoring fans at the tents, revealed that she's been hitting the recording studio. "I'm working on an EP that will hopefully be out by summer," she said.

Where she'd never been, she said, was to a fashion show. Truth is, that's still the case. Since Johnson declared bankruptcy last spring, this week's show was limited to a preview of her new active line, with models working out using champagne bottles as weights and tights as exercise bands.

Still, Melanie said she loved the show. Not only did she meet front-row types like Jay Alexander, Patricia Fields, and her favorite, Nigel Barker, but she also went backstage and got a big hug from Johnson, who invited her to appear on her upcoming reality show.

On a scale of one to 10? "This was totally a 10," said Martinez. "It was awesome and funny and bold and edgy and crazy."
