Like emerging jewels, juicy, red strawberries are peeping from under leaves across Long Island. With an earlier start than usual, U-pick farms are already throwing open their gates to welcome those hungry for the ultimate sweet bite of spring.
"Last year was late, and this year is early," says Eve Kaplan-Walbrecht, who co-owns Riverhead's Garden of Eve Organic Farm and Market, which started picking in late May. "We expect one of the best seasons in years."
Kaplan-Walbrecht suggests that those picking should bear in mind more than just the day's weather. "The taste of your strawberries will be at their best when it hasn't rained for a few days before you pick them," she says.
Jennifer DiVello, whose mother owns Patty's Berries and Bunches in Riverhead, has another suggestion: "Berries don't ripen off the vine -- they're not like tomatoes," she says. "So pick berries that are red, ripe."
BEFORE YOU GO
Call before you head out to make sure patches aren't picked out. While most farms charge by the container ($4 to $6 a quart), some may charge by the pound, with a quart weighing a little more than 1 1/2 pounds. A few charge a per-person fee to enter the fields.
