Vera Wang mentions nothing of time travel. Her program notes discuss the virtues of gray (a prominent shade in this collection), the long leggy silhouette, the glimpses of skin.
But the soundtrack is the first hint that there’s something…futuristic going on here. The “music” includes weird static-y beeps and mechanical tones, like something out of “2001: A Space Odyssey.”
Then there are steely prints of columns and vaults, with clean spare lines like those found in modern architecture.
When else but in some future when Madonna is President will women rush to wear the nude net lace dress with bright tangerine bra and Bermuda short glowing from underneath? Chiffon is crisscrossed and drawn up high on the neck, and peplums (a key element from last season) are tossed around hips. And the last few dresses in the show include sweet organza numbers in Dutch blue, with bibs, slips and breastplates made of glittery crystal mesh.
For some women (who won’t be able to resist the distinctly modern texture of the lace chiffon), the future is now. For others, it may be time to invest in a luxe camisole or two first.
