Add a Turkey Trot to your Thanksgiving plans

Is it our guilty feelings about holiday gluttony, or the excitement of a Thursday off with family and friends? No holiday seems to inspire competitive runners more than Thanksgiving. Each year brings a cornucopia of turkey trots to Long Island.

Here is a sampling of the season's tasty offerings. Check websites for details and lower fees for early registration:

Nov. 13

Bayville Turkey Trot9:45 a.m. at West Harbor Memorial Beach, Bay Shore for 5K; 9 a.m. for 1K kids Chicken Run. Benefits The Matthew Fetzer's Holiday Toy Drive. Info at 516-628-1439, ext. 16, Cost: $25 for 5K, free for Chicken Run.

Nov. 21

Long Beach Turkey Trot9 a.m. at intersection of Riverside Boulevard and boardwalk in Long Beach for 10K; 8:30 a.m. for one-mile fun run (elementary through high school kids). Info at 516-431-3890, Cost: $20 pre-registration, $25 day of race, $5 fun run.

Massapequa Park Turkey Trot9 a.m. at Brady Park (Lake Shore Drive and Front Street) for 5K; 8 a.m. for one-mile children's fun run. Benefits the YES Community Counseling Center. Registration at park from 7-8:30 a.m. Info at 516-313-8329, Cost: $30 at park, $25 in advance, $15 for youth race.

Nov. 25

Gail Gorin Memorial Turkey Trot9:15 a.m. at Smithtown Elementary School (51 Lawrence Ave., Smithtown) for 5K; 8:45 a.m. for family Fun Run. Benefits the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. Info at 631-382-4505‎, Cost: $20 5K run, $30 Family Run up to 4 people, $10 individual fun run.

Garden City Turkey Trot10 a.m. at St. Paul's Campus Field House (Stewart Avenue), Garden City for 5-mile race; 9:30 a.m. for 1.4-mile fun run (12 and under). Benefits the Muscular Dystrophy Association and The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. Info at 516-515-1598, Cost: $20 preregistered 5K, $10 fun run; $30 late registration, $15 fun run.

Massapequa Turkey Trot9:15 a.m. at Marjorie Post Park for 5K; 8:45 a.m. for Fun Run. Benefits the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. Info at Cost: $20 5K run, $35 for family run up to 4 people, $12 individual fun run.

Nissequogue River State Park 5K Run/Walk9 a.m. at Nissequogue River State Park (799 Saint Johnland Rd., Kings Park) for 5K; 8:30 a.m. for 1K Turkey Trot for kids (12 and younger). Info at Cost: $20 preregistered (postmarked by Nov. 18, online through Nov. 22), $25 day of race, $10 fun run.

Port Washington Thanksgiving Day 5-Mile Run: 8:30 a.m. at Manorhaven Beach Park. Benefits the Community Chest of Port Washington. Info at 516-767-2121, Cost: $35 preregistered, $50 day of race, $25 ages 18 and younger.

Shorham-Wading River Thanksgiving Day Foot Races8 a.m. at Miller Avenue School, Shoreham for 5K; 8 a.m. for 1-mile (13 and older); 8:15 a.m. 1-mile (12 and younger); 8:50 a.m. 5-mile race. Info at 631-821-8116, Cost: $15 per race preregistered, $20 day of race.

Smiles Change Lives Turkey Trot9 a.m. at Corey Beach Park (on Middle Road), Blue Point for 5K and 1.5 mile walk; 8:45 a.m. for Fun Run (kids 10 and younger). Benefits Smiles Change Lives Long Island. Info at Cost: $20 preregistered, $25 day of 5K and walk, $12 fun run.

Townwide Fund of Huntington Thanksgiving Day Run9 a.m. at American Legion Hall, Halesite for 4-mile race; 8:30 a.m. for 1K Fun Run. Info at 631-271-3349, Cost: $18 preregistered, $6 for fun run, $25 late registration (received after Nov. 19), $30 day of race.

Nov. 27
