Award-winning under-$50,000 kitchen

When designer Wendy Lepkoff was thrown a curve during a recent kitchen makeover (the boxes of tile did not contain the expected tiles), she ordered up a mosaic that earned her a national award from the Interior Design Society in the "Kitchens Under $50,000" category. Lepkoff, who owns Wendy Interiors Inc. in Baldwin, instructed the contractor for the Baldwin kitchen to create the mosaic using broken pieces of the white tile, along with purple and gray ones. It fits so perfectly under the table that it looks like it was her intention all along and earned her a bronze finish in the designer-of-the-year contest. Total: About $48,000 (includes $5,000 designer fee). -- Sylvia E. King-Cohen
