The 21st annual Hicks Flower & Garden Show is under way and will run through March 20, with fantasy garden vignettes set up for inspiration, gardening lectures, cooking demonstrations and more to make you pine for spring.
Visitors also can bring soil samples for testing by master gardeners from the Cornell Cooperative Extension of Nassau County. The master gardeners will also be on hand to answer questions and offer advice. Look for the folks wearing red shirts at a centrally located table and at the garden counter.
It's always a great time, and after such a brutal winter, a breath of fresh air, to put it mildly.
Seeds and plants are for sale, too, but be careful what you buy: It's just not time to put tomatoes or annuals or even perennials out yet, so you'll have to keep them indoors -- and alive -- until planting time if you purchase them now.
Hicks Nurseries is at 100 Jericho Turnpike in Old Westbury and is open seven days a week from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.; show hours are Monday through Thursday from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., and Friday, Saturday and Sunday, from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.
