Mailbag: Rooting lilacs

Hi Jessica.  I lost two good sized limbs off my lilac bush in the  recent storm.  Is there any way to "root" the ends of the limbs to  make another bush?  Right now I have the limbs in a bucket of water.  The branches already have buds on them. -- Thanks. Patricia S.

Hi, Patricia. You won't likely have any luck rooting lilac limbs, as the plant is best propagated from softwood cuttings, or pieces of tender new growth. What you've done in the bucket is force bloom them. Those buds will open and look pretty in a vase, but when they're done, the limbs won't be of much use to you. Sorry. -- Jessica
