More snow is on the way

We just can't catch a break. Another snowstorm is predicted for Friday, with about an inch of accumulation expected on Long Island, with more north and west of Long Island.

No need to worry about your crocuses and daffodils; while you might lose a few tender flowers, they should be fine. You didn't plant your vegetables or annuals, right? Tell me you didn't. I know it's tempting to get anxious and jump the gun when there's a gorgeously warm early spring day like we had last week, but annuals and vegetables -- except such cool-season plants as lettuce, spinach, peas and radishes -- shouldn't see the light of day until Memorial Day. Say it with me now: "Patience is a virtue."  It's a time- and money-saver, too.

This whole winter reminds me of the old adage: "Year of snow, crops will grow." That's because snow is a great insulator, keeping soil temperatures even, and when it melts periodically, underground roots get hydrated. So bundle up Friday and keep your eye on June's roses.
