“It took months to find the right fabric to match the aqua of the couch,” Colondona says. She used brown in the room as an accent color. “If I was going to reupholster a couch of that size, it would almost be cheaper to buy a new one.” (Feb. 7, 2013) Photo Credit: Heather Walsh

When Michele Colondona looked at the off-the-rack window treatments in her Manorville living room, they didn't reflect either her style or her business, J&M Window Treatments. She says she knew she had to rectify the situation by designing custom treatments. Once the project began, she and her husband John decided to redo the home's original fireplace and mantel to make it a focal point of the room. But one thing that had to stay was the light aqua sofa.

"It was only five years old," Colondona says. She did reupholster the matching chair in complementary brown. "My home is my showroom, and I wanted to reflect that in the decor," she says. Total: $22,245. --Sylvia E. King-Cohen
