Kidsday: No homework over the summer?
By Your mom calls to you, "Come on, you have to finish your math sheet!" You glance at the calendar. "But Mom! It's Aug. 2! Why do I have to do math? I'm not supposed to have homework.". Should kids get homework over the summer? I surveyed 225 fourth- and fifth-graders, and 211 kids said, no homework. They want to have fun in the summer, not worry about schoolwork.. Only 15 kids said they want schoolwork. If they have it during the school year, why shouldn't they have it during the summer, too?. As you can see, there was a big difference in the votes. More kids want to have fun in the sun; they don't want to sit around doing work. But, there are still some kids who want to stay smart over the summer. I wonder if teachers will ever finally say, "No homework over the summer!" to relieve kids all over the globe..
A smarter season, or not?
. Summer is the time to relax, have fun and spend time with your friends and family. There aren't regular assignments to worry about. Even though there is no school, you should keep up a bit. If you don't . . . well, what will happen to you in September?. Do kids get smarter or dumber over the summer? Kids who care about school will practice educational skills over the summer. Some educational skills they might practice are math flash cards, reading and grammar. They will become smarter over the summer. Kids who don't care about school and don't like school won't practice these skills. They will be behind in September when school starts.. We surveyed 133 fourth- and fifth-grade students. We found out that 36 students said they get smarter over the summer and 97 students said they will have some catching up to do when September rolls around.. So, it depends on what you are willing to do. Practice several skills, or don't practice these educational skills over summer break. In the beginning of the school year, it will show.
