It might be hard to find an open bar stool Tuesday night at some Long Island bars and restaurants. While Tuesday might be thought of as a quieter night for the industry, many Long Island spots use the weekday as an opportunity to host trivia nights.
So what does it take to get people to come out to play question-and-answer on a Tuesday?
"A plethora of things to be honest," says Ben Freiser, co-owner of Beginnings bar and restaurant in Atlantic Beach, explaining that picking themes that match current trends is a key enticement. "October will be trivia themes like ‘Hocus Pocus' and December will feature ‘Home Alone.’ " November will feature nights themed around Harry Potter, Disney, "Schitt’s Creek" and a combination of "Friends" and Thanksgiving. The nights also get a boost from the host, who may end up dressed as a character from the night's film or show focus.
Freiser’s venue has been hosting Tuesday night trivia for more than five years, including during the pandemic, when it went virtual and was held other nights to keep homebound customers entertained. It’s since returned to Tuesdays and he has "no thoughts of ever stopping it."
If you — whether with friends or on your own — would like to enjoy some food and drink while trying to outthink others, here are some places to put yourself to the test on a Tuesday. Events are free to sign up unless otherwise mentioned.
