So long to dog baths that leave your bathroom looking like a hurricane hit it!
PetSmart opened its first Pet Spa in Oceanside at 529 Atlantic Ave. as a concept store on Monday, Aug. 15, and Newsday got a first look inside.
The store features a modern design with approximately 7,400 square feet of space, a smaller footprint than most PetSmart stores. The Oceanside location features a self-service dog wash, grooming salon, coffee lounge for pet parents, retail space and Banfield Pet Hospital.
PetSmart Pet Spa celebrates its grand opening on Saturday, Aug. 20, with a ribbon-cutting ceremony at 9 a.m. and freebies throughout the day.
Visitors find a display of treats as they arrive at PetSmart Pet Spa.
Celebrity pet influencers and Instagram stars Oscar Frenchie NYC (@oscarfrenchienyc) and Tinkerbelle (@tinkerbellethedog) learn how to work the registers at PetSmart Pet Spa. Oscar hails from Astoria, and Tinkerbelle is from Rockville Centre.
At this brand-new, state-of-the-art grooming facility, dogs can get beautified at their own stations while pet parents watch. Pictured is store leader Mike Walsh, a former hotel leader at PetSmart PetsHotel boarding facility in Lake Grove.
Walsh says the salon service prices are pretty standard for groomers in the region. Take your pup in for a basic shampoo and blow dry (or a "pawdicure!") -- or upgrade to "pet expressions" and have Fido try chalking, stenciling, feathering, nail polish, a mohawk or the intriguing "glitter dog."
Dog parents who don't want to deal with the mess of bath time can bring their pups into the Oceanside location, hoist their dogs into one of three large tubs and feel free to use any of the products on tap.
What's the idea behind having the owner wash his or her own dog, as opposed to having a professional groomer do the dirty work? "It's an opportunity to bond with your dog," explains Mardi Larson, director of public relations for PetSmart. "Pet parents are able to bathe their dogs, without the big mess of their dogs splashing around; they can just come here and do it all here."
Dogs large and small are invited to suds up in these tubs -- with the help of their owners, of course.
Oscar Frenchie NYC serves as a guinea pig of sorts and gets a bath by his owner, Andre Falcao.
Some "human brands," such as Burt's Bees and Chi, also have grooming lines for pets. Who knew?
Just be sure not to mistake your pet's hair-care products for your own on a busy morning.
Clothes, collars, leashes, beds, toys and pet gifts are all for sale here.
Instagram star Tinkerbelle seems to like PetSmart's new merchandise a lot.
Banfield Pet Hospital is a partner of PetSmart's and is in many of their stores. In addition to this veterinary clinic, prescription dog food is also offered for dogs with specific dietary needs, such as hypoglycemia or gastrointestinal problems.
Pets and humans are equally welcome at the new store. It remains to be seen if both species will be equally excited about the new amenities.
