'Titus the Entertainer' wins Newsday's pets video contest

If we've learned one thing from Newsday's Pets! Camera! Action! video contest, it's that dogs (and cats, and birds) can do some pretty amazing things. Pet owners showed off their animals fetching newspapers, singing and performing other amazing tricks. But one pup in particular stood out -- for balancing a zucchini on his head.

Meet Titus. He's a "married man," a "country singer" and, most notably, a rescue dog with more than 65,000 Facebook followers. Nicknamed "Ty" by owner Laura Morgillo of Islip Terrace, the pit-bull mix beat out more than 100 pets from Long Island and Queens to win bragging rights -- and a $200 gift card.

The pup's 11-second video garnered more than 3,700 votes from fans who enjoyed watching the 4-year-old balance a zucchini on his head. Clearly this pooch, who went from homeless street wanderer to Internet sensation, is no ordinary dog. When Morgillo rescued him from a Bronx shelter, she introduced him to her husband, Joseph, a marine mechanic, and her four other dogs, including Hailey, a 7-year-old pit bull. It wasn't long before Titus and Hailey fell in love and married -- in a ceremony arranged by Morgillo that attracted more than 100 of Titus' Facebook friends and raised $5,000 for charity.

Although balancing a zucchini on his head is quite impressive, Titus also can balance a full glass of wine, a live lobster, pie and a baseball bat. Like other pups, he enjoys running "through the bushes like a lunatic," says Morgillo. He also loves rope toys and all things red velvet.

Morgillo has big plans for Ty's winnings: She's going to "give it to a family that needs medical help with their animals, or food. That's what we enter contests for."
