Women's golf group enjoys robust participation

At a time when much of golf is either stagnant or shrinking, one conspicuous exception held its big Tee-Off Dinner Tuesday night.

"We are growing," said Jackie Meli-Rizzo, president of Long Island's chapter of the Executive Women's Golf Association. About 400 of her group's 1,000 members attended the event, signing up for 13 leagues (competition for beginners through low handicappers) and 500 weekly tee times.

The group plays at a variety of courses - Harbor Links, Town of Oyster Bay, Spring Lake, Eisenhower Park and others - and downplays the "executive" title. "We like to think of it as 'Every Woman's Golf Association,' " said Meli-Rizzo, director of finance at National Land Tenure in Garden City.

"Women are a force in golf," she said. "We finally figured out what guys have been doing all these years - having a fun day out among people you feel comfortable with and then having a quick beer afterward."
