Sunset Restaurant Off the Beach has closed and has been transformed into Beach Bowl Acai Cafe, a new bowl-centric restaurant from the same owners — Sal Cataldo and Christine Kim.
Sunset Restaurant Off the Beach opened in Islip in February, a sit-down, diner-turned neighborhood restaurant. The change is in response to residents’ request for fast, healthy and inexpensive meals.
Beach Bowl Acai Cafe serves breakfast sandwiches, wraps, a breakfast pizza and pancakes ($5.95 to $8.95). For lunch they’ve got burgers, burritos, burrito bowls and personal pizzas ($4.95 to $7.95). Acai bowls, based on the South American berry believed by some to be a potent source of healthful micronutrients, are served in small ($4.95), medium ($6.95) and large ($10.95) sizes, with add-ins such as flaxseed, peanut butter, Nutella, cantaloupe, kiwi, mango and Greek yogurt.
Cataldo remains the proprietor of Sunset on the Beach, a seasonal spot at Islip Town Beach, that closed at the end of September. This was his third season.
Beach Bowl Acai Cafe is open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m., seven days a week at 545 Main St., Islip, 631-581-8200
