Ernest Hemingway’s “The Old Man and the Sea” sets the scene at a June 15 dinner at Beginnings in Atlantic Beach, with five Cuban-inspired courses and cocktail pairings.
The restaurant is an homage to Great Books, with bookshelves and framed first pages of classic novels as décor and a bar that looks like a card catalog.
The dinner starts with snacks for the table, moves into fried oysters with Cuban spring rolls and corn on the cob, followed by carne asada tacos plated with rice and beans. A crackling calamari and banana salad follows, along with a seafood stew with grouper, mussels, clams, scallops and lobster. Dessert is a selection of churros, guava empanadas, flan and a Cuban coffee torte. Cocktails highlight a variety of Rhum, like the “old Cuban,” with aged Rhum, mint and sparkling wine.
The evening starts at 7 p.m. and costs $75 per person, plus tax and gratuity.
