About 150 firefighters from eight different fire departments responded to a blaze at Caracalla Ristorante in Syosset shortly after midnight Friday. After midnight on Friday, a fire ripped through Caracalla, the Italian restaurant at 102 Jericho Tpke. in Syosset. The restaurant was closed at the time and no one was injured.

Chef-owner Vincenzo Della Torre opened the old-school Italian in 1984. He had been a saucier on the doomed ocean liner Andrea Doria during its final voyage in 1956, and the restaurant’s dining room featured a portrait of the great ship. Over the years, Della Torre hosted a number of dinners for his fellow survivors.

According to Della Torre’s son-in-law, Sergio Oliverio, no decision will be made about the restaurant’s future until the building inspector weighs in.
