It’s not just cool, clean sushi at Koiso. On a recent cold, wet night I stopped in for a hearty, restorative meal. Before I even ordered I was presented with a little dish of noodles seasoned with sesame seeds, chives and bacon. Then came a daily special of “jumbo gyoza,” pork dumplings which had been steamed before being seriously pan-seared on one side. Porky, salty, tender, crispy, yummy.
The main event was this big bowl of ramen noodles whose savory broth also contained spinach, nori (dried seaweed), half a hard-cooked egg, a big chunk of pork and strips of pickled bamboo. A perfect supper.
In the winter, all I want is a big bowl of Asian noodles in broth. Sadly, this is a culinary area in which Long Island falls pretty short.
Koiso is at 540 Westbury Ave., Carle Place, 516-333-3434.
