Caterer opens unconventional restaurant Artaux Fine Foods in Sea Cliff

Artaux Fine Foods, a Sea Cliff caterer, has expanded into the space next door to launch an unconventional little restaurant and market.

Chef-owner James Muir, who was born in Argentina but grew up in Locust Valley, said the new place was built from scratch. One side of the room, he said, incorporates both traditional and modern elements. On the other side, he described a huge refrigerator case with cheeses and charcuterie. People aren't sure whether the place is a restaurant or a cheese/charcuterie shop, Muir said, adding that he likes to see the surprise on their faces.

Seating is at a communal table for 10 as well as two tables, which can seat either two or four. In the kitchen is a chef's table that seats up to 10. People can call a day or two in advance for special tasting menu or multicourse wine tasting dinner.

On the menu: French toast grilled prosciutto and cheese sandwiches with tomato soup ($11), beet cured salmon tartare ($9); a baby kale Caesar salad ($8 small; $15 large). Among main courses: roasted beef short ribs ($28 a la carte; $40 for three-course prix fixe with appetizer or salad and dessert, also available boxed to go), pressed hake with Serrano ham and English pea puree ($26; $36) and a seasonal vegetable pave ($20; $32). Until 4 p.m., you can get a panino, such as the version made with prosciutto, Brie, arugula and fig jam ($10).

Update (May 26): Artaux Fine Foods currently is not operating as a restaurant. A Village of Sea Cliff hearing on the catereras application is slated for June 16, 2015.
