Cinco de Mayo celebrations, specials at Long Island restaurants

Long Island may be far from the Mexican border, but Cinco de Mayo celebrations are well within reach. The holiday commemorates the Mexican victory over French forces at the Battle of Puebla on May 5, 1862. In America, Cinco de Mayo has taken on a festive vibe. From tequila tastings to taco nights, these Long Island celebrations hope to entice.


Besito Mexican restaurants are offering specials on Cinco

Besito (Multiple locations): In addition to its regular menu and giveaways all day on May 5, Besito Mexican restaurants in Huntington (402 New York Ave.) and Roslyn (1516 Old Northern Blvd.) will offer such specials as Queso Fundido con Langosta, a lobster-enhanced version of its signature cheese dip appetizer and a pan-roasted fillet of halibut served with grilled queso asado, roasted potato gratin, avocado and salsa verde. From noon to 4 p.m. guests can enjoy a complimentary Patron Tequila tasting. Before and during the event, guests can enter a $500 gift card giveaway. More info:

Havana Central (630 Old Country Rd., Garden City): The rhythm is going to get you at the Roosevelt Field Mall restaurant’s pre-Cinco de Mayo celebration on Wednesday, May 4 from 8 p.m. to midnight.
