I was sad to see an "out of business" sign on the door of Royal Kabob & Grill in Huntington Station. This spot had seen a couple of owners but the last ones really knew what they were doing. I loved the chana chat — a sort of soupy salad made with chickpeas, potatoes, onions, tomatoes, yogurt, chilies and cilantro — and the chapli kebab, two grilled patties of ground chicken that literally oozed with succulence and flavor. Royal Kabob also had a great lunch special that I happily availed myself of on many occasions.
Less missed will be Kikku of Empire, a Chinese restaurant in Syosset that had lost its way in an Asian-fusion thicket. "Kikku of Empire" is now obscured with a sign that says "Golden Temple." When I called (the number remains the same), the woman who answered the phone said that the restaurant not only has a new name, but new owners and a new chef.
Golden Temple is at 417 Jericho Tpke., Syosset; 516-364-6476.
I'll miss the chana chat at Royal Kabob.
